Asphalt Patching & Pothole Repair

From a single pothole to a multi-thousand-square-foot full-depth reconstruction. Hot-mix patching, edge-prepped properly, bonded with the surrounding pavement to last as long as the rest of the lot.

Types of Asphalt Repair We Handle

The right repair depends on what failed and why. We assess each lot and recommend the most cost-effective approach for each problem area — not the most expensive.

Pothole Repair

Saw-cut clean edges, remove failed material, prime the cut, fill with hot-mix asphalt, compact, and seal the joint. Done right, the patch outlasts most of the surrounding pavement.

Full-Depth Patching

When the base has failed (not just the surface), we cut down to subgrade, replace failed base material, compact in lifts, and pave back with hot-mix. The right call for areas with recurring failures.

Surface Patching (Skin Patch)

For shallow surface failures where the base is still sound. Faster, lower cost, ideal for areas with raveling or shallow alligator cracking that hasn't reached the base layer.

Trench & Utility Cut Repair

Restoration of utility cuts and trench patches with proper base prep, compaction, and joint sealing. Critical for preventing settlement and water intrusion at the cut edges.

Cold-Patch (Emergency)

When hot-mix isn't available — winter, freezing temps, immediate-hazard situations — we apply cold-patch as a stopgap. Permanent hot-mix repair gets scheduled for the next dry window.

Edge & Curb Repair

Damaged edges along curbs, drains, and transitions take the most stress. We rebuild edges so water sheds correctly and the pavement doesn't continue to ravel.

Why Patch Now Instead of Waiting

Potholes only get bigger. Water gets in, freeze-thaw cycles widen the hole, traffic pulls more material out. A 6-inch pothole becomes a 3-foot failure in one Connecticut winter.

Surface damage protects the base. Once water reaches the base layer through cracks and holes, repair cost goes up 5-10x. Patching early is preventive maintenance, not just cosmetic.

Liability matters on commercial property. Trip hazards and known potholes are a liability for the property owner. Fast repair is the cheapest form of risk management.

It's a quick job. Most pothole and small-patch work is done in a few hours. Lot stays in service except for the immediate work area.

Asphalt Patching FAQs

What is the difference between patching and full pavement replacement?

Patching repairs a localized failure (pothole, alligator cracking, surface deterioration) while the surrounding pavement is still sound. Full replacement is needed when the asphalt is failing across most of the lot or the base has degraded. In most cases, well-placed patching extends pavement life 5-10 years before replacement is needed.

What is the difference between hot-mix and cold-patch?

Hot-mix asphalt is the permanent solution — applied at high temperature, compacted, and bonds chemically with the surrounding pavement. Cold-patch is a temporary or emergency repair that can be applied in cold or wet weather. We use hot-mix for any permanent repair where the weather and schedule allow.

How long does a patch last?

A properly installed hot-mix patch with good edge preparation typically lasts 5-10 years, and often as long as the surrounding pavement. Cold-patch repairs are shorter-lived (1-3 years) and are meant as a stopgap until permanent repair is possible.

Can you patch potholes in winter?

Yes — we use cold-patch for emergency winter repairs when hot-mix isn't available. For permanent repairs, we schedule hot-mix work for the next stretch of dry weather above 50°F, which in Connecticut typically means mid-April onward.

Do you handle large-scale commercial reconstruction?

Yes. We handle everything from a single pothole to multi-thousand-square-foot full-depth reconstruction. Larger jobs are typically phased so the lot stays partially in service while we work, and we coordinate timing with property management.
